In collaboration with affiliate, Food Banks United, CommunicAID's new Mercer Street Satellite Center weekly food pantry fed thousands of impoverished individuals in nearby communities this past week.
Last Friday, CommunicAID's new Mercer Street Satellite Center held the weekly food pantry. We had over 500 volunteers sign up who prepared, organized, and distributed food items to a record breaking 4000 people! This was the most people fed in one day by CommunicAID's food pantry in collaboration with affiliate Food Banks United. The event was scheduled from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., however, due to the holidays coming up, we predicted a huge increase in need for our resources and actually decided to extend our hours till 5 p.m. once we saw the hundreds of people still lined up down the road in need as well as to accommodate those who traveled miles to reach us. We were extremely grateful to have been able to round up hundreds of volunteers, who sacrificed there morning and afternoon, showed up with a positive attitude and resilience, in order to give back to the community and our cause. And thanks to Mercer Street Satellite Center's new 12,000 square ft food pantry, we had the space necessary to feed the 4000 impoverished individuals. After that day, we saw in increase in both our Jamaica and Mercer facilities literacy coalition and Back- to-Work resources, which further proves the change we are inciting for individuals to better their lives, further improving low-income communities in the New York area. The huge success and impact last week is the heart of what keeps us going as an organization and we are proud to have so much support and to be part of something greater than us all.
"Since the opening of the Mercer Street Satellite Center, we have been able to reach more individuals in need and broaden the CommunicAID community with our resources to offer a helping hand. What I witnessed at our last food pantry event further fueled my passion and drive to continue expanding CommunicAID locations, positively impact communities that have been overlooked, and put an end to homelessness and hunger in New York City and eventually America" – CommunicAID President Suzanne. J. McGrath, MSW.
